'Betterment of the Breed' ??
« on: July 24, 2011, 11:49:39 AM »
The aim of breeders is to breed for 'the betterment of the breed'. Realistically, over the last 20 years for example, HAS THE BREED IMPROVED???

I think looks are taking over health, not just in Danes, in a lot of breeds...

No Danes in uk have not inproved in the last 20 years, far from it.  There are a number of reasons for this, judges putting up ill conformed danes to please their friends is one, when a dane wins there is always someone who will use it, even if it has nothing to offer the breed. The internet is another reason, in years gone by, puppies were sold to show/breeding homes, by word of mouth, you asked a well established breeder if you could go on their list, and eventualy, you may get third, or maybe second pick of one of their litters, They wouldnt let you have a sub stanndard puppy to represent their kennel in the show ring, and if it was a bitch, it would be the quality start of your new line. When you came to breed, god help you if you didnt go back and ask the breeder were to go with her bitch!. Now you just look on e-pups and buy yourself a bitch, show it breed from it, and pick the sire by stabbing the stud book with a pin!, no mentors no advice from someone who has been there seen it and got the t-shirt, thats why we have so many bad danes in the show ring.

Totaly agree Sheena, and wow betold if you try to tell one of your bitches owners that a certain dog would not be good for your bitch and you try to steer them in the right direction, they dont want to learn and think your interfering, any ole dog will do ..
